If the NFL ever decides to really get serious about concussions, they will start looking into radically different helmets.

Specifically, research suggests a helmet with a soft outer surface would help to slow the deceleration of the head in a collision, thereby limiting the "brain bouncing off the cranium" effect that causes many concussions.

One prototype helmet is highlighted in the links below. It has soft pads on the inside, a hard shell in the middle, and a soft outer shell to cushion blows.

It is made by the same company that introduced "pro caps" many years ago. Pro caps may have helped, but players largely ignored them because they looked ridiculous.

Even if they are intimidated by going that extreme I'm absolutely baffled as to why the league doesn't at least bring in tougher guidelines on which lids players should be wearing. The number wearing inferior helmets in comparison to the lids like Revolution (lid I wear myself, apparently safer than Riddell's basic VSR4 and from personal experience a damned sight more comfortable as well), Revolution Speed, Xenith (not common, Dallas Clark wears it) & Schutt Ion. It's even more concerning when you see guys with a history of concussions not looking after themselves and continuing to use inferior technology rather than these more modern, technologically advanced lids.
