So great to see Classic Rock prevail over the Super Bowl, instead of that crappy hip hop shit they've been trying to push.
That said, I have a few comments:
These guys are really starting to get old. While Pete Townshend rocked it out (to the best of his abilities), Roger Daltrey looked like he was ready for the rest home. He hardly moved, and when he did, it was to play harmonica during Baba O'Riley (was soooo wanting to see someone break out the viola), and it looked like it nearly killed him.
Was it me, or was the audio fucked up? Hardly a "Screaming" Who concert, as it seemed as though the guitars were somewhat muted.

I'm a young guy, but a fan of classic rock over the current, modern pop/rock music...
That said, it's time to go back to some more modern bands. I love Bruce Springsteen and I love the Who. But they are getting old and showing it...let's get some more youthful acts in there.
Maybe an 80s band?

Hip Hop, Classic Rock, Baroque, Bluegrass, Inuit Throat Singing... my mute button works the same for all of them. I think they should play whatever maximizes profit for them.
On another note, exciting second half, right?

The Who should have lip synched -- they are showing their age. And why not play about their hits from the British Invasion era of the mid 60's?

Agree with everything you say here. They looked like old-timers and sounded like drunk karaoke singers. Not that Queen Latifah was any better...

I saw the Who a few years ago at the first Virgin Fest at Pimlico. They absolutely rocked it out back then. And I'm also a young guy (22), but the Who is one of my favorite bands, I absolutely love classic rock as well as the modern rock bands.
However, I was deeply disappointed with their performance at the Super Bowl. I thought they'd have a lot more energy than that, and it just seemed sloppy. This was the one Super Bowl halftime show I was looking forward too, the rest I've seen I couldn't care less about (U2, was "ok" but not great). The way the medley was setup wasn't that good either I have to say.
The only thing worst than the halftime show is Phil Simms all over Brees' jock.

That was decent overall. It did not suck, but it was not good. They were way too old to be rocking that hard without a round bottom chair.
The mullet on the drummer was distracting, but the music was still good and the timing right, but the vocal chops were shot even though he was not off key.
It would be nice to get something between Pink and the Who. Not too Taylor Swift, but not too Jay Z or Aerosmith.

The Who is one of my all time favorite bands (top 5)... with that said...
I was disappointed. This is not how I want to remember The Who. Pete rocked but every not from Roger sounded painful....
Very few older bands can still rock it (I thought Petty did a good halftime show)... the only few I wouldnt mind seeing would be either CCR(Man still hits the notes) AC/DC or maybe Van Halen (if they get their auto tune to the right deceibel)
I think next year they are going to have to try something newer, just not kid rock, nysnc, nelly, britney spears doing walk this way again

I suggest for next year: Foo Fighters, Stone Temple Pilots, or Red Hot Chili Peppers.
Hell...just do all 3.

Their age didn't bother me as much as the musical performance. I've heard them much tighter. Daltrey wasn't bad but I can't say he was really good either.
Townshend's guitar was a little obnoxiously over distorted and too loud in some passages.
The sound mix (the feed going to TV) could have been better. The drums sounded like they were in the backround of the mix and Pete T. was a little too up front.
I know they only have a short time to play but the schmedly of songs seemed a little rushed at times.
All in all: Too bad cause the Who is/was an outstanding live band.
I give em a "C" and thank them for their past, great contributions to rock.

I went to the crapper about halfway through... It was rather brutal...Although the Pinball Wizard intro was on point...
I'd like to see Van Halen take the stage as the ultimate American hard rock band... Gauranteed to KICK ASS!:rocking:

Not a fan of country, but its better than putting Lady Gaga, Kanye West, or Lil Wayne on stage.
Thought of 2 more interesting half-time show performers: Elton John and Billy Joel.

2 of those I've never heard of. One I've heard of, but never heard. Regardless, I'm going to continue to raWk the mute button and let you fight amongst yourselves. ;)

According to this (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_Super_Bowl_halftime_shows), the Super Bowl and NFL has hardly been trying to push "crappy hip hop shit".
Maybe you are thinking of the NBA all star game?

I should have been clearer. When I used the term "they", I meant the music industry in general, not the Super Bowl organizers.

Well, I'm pretty sure "they" push it because it is a huge part of the music landscape now whether the older generations like it or not.
I'm not trying to turn this into any type of music style argument, and everybody is entitled to their opinion, but the industry pushes what sells...and hip-hop/pop sells.
I don't particularly care for soft rock, but I'm not starting a thread calling that music "crap".

Oh, it's not just hip-hop. It's practically any music genre these days. The problem is that the music industry seems to only care about physically attractive stars, even if they have minimal talent. For evidence of this, all one has to do is look at the Disney Channel over the past 7-10 years. They find a cute teenage girl to play a role in a TV show, and suddenly she moves on to become some kind of international music star. Doesn't really matter if she can actually... cough cough... yanno, sing.
"Video Killed The Radio Star" is true in every sense. It's all about looks, and very little to do with actual music these days. If the biggest bands in rock were to emerge these days (e.g. Zeppelin, The Who, Rolling Stones), I doubt they would get much play in the music industry because those bands are full of some really ugly fucks.

They're old, half the band is dead and frankly I thought it was pretty bloody awful. Considering they are half dead and the surviving members seriously old I probably shouldn't have expected much but that was really poor. Still, it won't have offended anyone which ticks the NFL's box and CBS got their CSI link in there so that ticks their box. Still, least I had a buffet for 60 split between 20 people to distract me from it.

It was painful to see Daltrey struggle to reach high notes. And although Townshend played OK, his singing was also bad.
I think they should go back to having the best college bands perform.

It was about what I expected - I have seen them perform recently and knew what to expect - I am a huge Who fan so I enjoyed it but i can see how they really don't have any mass appeal anymore. Especially for the younger crowd.
They should stick with smaller venues - Where the fans are all Who fans - Roger could take a dump on the stage and they would still love it.
I was hoping that Pete would smash his guitar at the end - just for old times sake.

Amen, a thousand Amens. And american idol is the worst offender in that effort to prostitute "music".
But about the Who. Roger Daltry always was the weak link in that band. The who would have been the who whoever they put up front, and I always thought that they would have been better with ANY ONE else. But i noticed the sound was completely unbalanced. It was almost like the instruments were on tape and at a different, lower level except when Pete was "rocking it." All in all, a welcome relief from some of the horrible shows at other half-times..... Janet Jackson, anyone?

I'm a firm believer that the Superbowl, as the biggest celebration of Americana on our calendar, should feature current American artists who are selling the most records.
While the trip down memory lane provided some quirky nostalgic fun briefly, I have grown tired of seeing bands from 2 generations ago perform the halftime show.
I'm not interested in seeing Pearl Jam or Green Day at Superbowl LXV (65), just like I'm not interested in seeing the resurrected ghost of Elvis or Perry Como next year.
Get Rihanna or Beyonce out there, double check for wardrobe malfunctions, bar them from grinding their naughty bits on the American flag, and put on a relevant halftime show.

And after the Janet Jackson fiasco, the NFL declared itself to be family friendly it will be a long time before there's a repetition. IIRC, it's been all country & oldies since.

This thread is funny, it's like the classic old man "those were the days" comments that are pervasive on Ravens boards. "Oh yea, riding in my 74 Camaro rocking out to some Van halen...those were the days!" :eyes: "They don't make <cars, women, music, houses, etc etc> like they used to!" :eyes:
Music is good now just like it was twenty years ago, and thirty years ago, and forty years ago, etc.
Although reading this thread I can't help but think of Archie and Edith "thossse were the daaaaaaays..."

As much as I love classic rock they should look for some alternatives. I mean the have pretty much mined it to death the last 5 years or so.
There are plenty of folks who want modern stuff. So what if someone flashes a body part once in a while? Do you know anyone who was permanently scarred from seeing Janet Jacksons breast?
