a good bit of FA's coming up after this next season, including 5 of our top 6 WR's. hopefully we can get some of this taken care of before the season, as we know that ozzie won't talk contracts during the year. my one issue with ozzie is him not locking up guys early that could save us money and stop them from hitting the free agency market. hopefully we get the key guys locked up (suggs, fabian, clayton/mason, koch, and landry) but there are some key backups that i would hate to see go too (chester, terry, edwards, bannan). any wish lists or priority orders from you guys?

Top of my list would be Haloti and Gaither, then Koch and if they can be done cheaply enough the McClains and Chester.
I suspect that Gaither will be matched not worked out beforehand, anyone know if the poison pill is still allowed in contracts (Seattle losing its guard)?
If so, then we had better get it done early!

The RFA game is too good not to play with Gaither hoping some team gets him to sign an offer sheet knowing it will be much lower than his true open market value. Poison pill only works if one team has cap trouble and the other does not, and so far the Ravens will not have any cap issues next year even if they get a CBA in place in time to have next year capped anyway. If uncapped, they will have 2 franchise tags and can tag Nagta and Suggs if need be. No one else is too big a concern. If Grubbs walks we can keep Chester or go back to the draft.

ngata won't be eligible for free agency, he'll still be a RFA in 2011 w/o a CBA

then he will most likley be tagged well into his early 30's like Haynesworth and Peppers unless he takes a below market extension.

Gaither's value is very hard to gauge right now.
The WR position is very interesting because of so many guys with contracts that are ending.
The CBA situation is gonna determine how alot of this will play out.

yeah, this gaither thing is a tough one. i think that we can give him a fair deal like staley's and it would be good for both sides. a good raise for him and great value for him down the road for us. he was third in the league in sacks allowed (elite LT), but gave up 15 penalties (dropping him back to average). the only road block i see is rosenhaus as his agent i believe, which could mean he would want an inflated figure...

WR and DL are going to be focal points in next season's FA period and the draft.
It's unlikely that we will re-sign DWill, Clayton, and Mason.
I'd love to see Mason get a 1 or 2 year extension, but he is 35 years old. How long can he sustain a high level of play like last season? Odds are not more than another year or two, at most.
That leaves Kelly Washington and Marcus Smith as the only WR's left on the roster with viable time on the field.
I think whoever performs better between DWill and Clayton will get a new contract, but not both.
Next year's WR FA pool isn't looking too hot, but there are some really promising draft prospects coming out next year. The two I am keeping my eyes on are Dez Bryant from Oklahoma State and Arrelious Benn from Illinois. Benn is a local guy too.
Braylon Edwards is also a UFA next season. As odd as it sounds, I wouldnt mind Braylon Edwards. Drops and all, he is arguably a better WR than anyone else on our team (after Mason) at this point.
Pryce, Bannan, and Gregg are all getting up there in age, so it's likely that the DL will garner a lot of attention next off-season as well. I think a lot of their moves will depend on defensive scheme as well.
I'm really hoping that this season we will see if guys like Marcus Smith, Kelly Washington, Ernie Wheelright, etc. can step up to the plate and become starters.

He's a RFA, no? Barring a new CBA, of course...

UFA.
1st rounders bypass the RFA status because their deals are 4 or more years.

He might be an RFA, but I thought he was a UFA...

I think that he is a UFA and that's why the Browns were considering moving him prior to this season because they want to get something for him. I sincerely doubt he will re-sign with the Browns next season.

That is not quite what I meant by poison pill, I guess you could say it is just cap space but there can be nasty twists.
to quote from wikipedia http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Poison_pill
In the wake of this contract offer, similar clauses have appeared in other contract offers, including a contract offered to Vikings wide receiver Nate Burleson by the Seahawks, which, with irony fully intended, was structured as a seven year, $49 million deal. The contract given to Burleson had two vengeful poison pill clauses in response to the contract offered to Hutchinson. Firstly, it stipulated that if Burleson were to play five or more games in the state of Minnesota during any single season over the life of the contract, the entire $49 million would become guaranteed. Secondly, if Burleson were to earn more per year on average than all of his team's running backs combined, the $49 million would be guaranteed. Since the Vikings play half of their games at home in Minnesota, and their running backs combined earned less per year than the $7 million in Burleson's contract, Minnesota was unable to match it.

I remembered reading this:

Who am I to know? :/

First things first, if we can hammer out a deal with Sizzle for Ozzie's right price. Secondly, lock up Haloti Ngata as early as possible.

If there is no new CBA deal by next year (which is looking like more and more of a certainty) many of those players will be RFA and not UFA's.

Guys like Edwards will NOT be UFA's...neither will Clayton or DWill or many of the other big name guys around the league...like Merriman and Ware.

That's very true.
Good point.
