Locking him up WAY early.

Niners Extend Joe Staley

The San Francisco 49ers have signed left tackle Joe Staley to a new contract.

The team announced the move earlier this afternoon.

The deal has been extended six years, with Staley now under contract through 2017.

“Joe Staley is the type of player we want to continue to add to this football team,” said General Manager Scot McCloughan. “He’s a tough, versatile, no-nonsense type of guy who wants to do whatever it takes to help his team win football games. Joe is a consummate team player and has been completely unselfish in the way he has approached his role on this team. We know what he means to the success of the 49ers and getting this extension done puts us in a very nice position for the future.”

Staley was a first-round pick in 2007, and he has started all 32 games of his career.

Terms of the new contract aren’t known. He has been signed through 2011, at salaries of $460,000, $550,000, and $650,000, respectively, over the next three seasons.

So he is now under contract for nine years. And it’ll be very interesting to see whether the base salaries he’s due to receive in future years will adequately reflect the left tackle market as the next decade unfolds. If not, the Niners could have the same kind of problem with Staley as the Eagles have had with several guys over the past decade.

Would be nice to get Gaither to agree to a similar deal.

And as much as I hear what PFT opines about the player being "mad" that he is underpaid in the middle of the deal,I wouldnt hesitate to lock a guy like Ngata or Gaither up early.

They know what they are doing, they have an agent to advise them and if they sign on the dotted line then thats what it is.They know that a payday now means NOW and not later.

If they want the security of that guaranteed money NOW then they know some money is being sacrificed down the line.

yeah, as nice as it is to have Gaither for 400K next year, we need to lock him up. i have read that we are already talking to his agent about an extention. what a great pick up though... a 5th round supplemental pick, he could be starting for the next 10-12 years for us. what a great move by Ozzie!!

Oher already said he isn't interested in holding out. he wants to get his contract signed and get on the field. which is great!! if we can lock up both of them, we would have the youngest and one of the most talented set of Ts in the league. and they get to grow and mature with Flacco.
we NEED to get this done!!!

They all say that. Hopefully he will be in on time.

Yea, but I think he means it more than most do.

Gaither is leagues better then Staley. I never wanted Staley. He's dainty.

Jonboy, Staley is a bit better player than you give him credit for.

All said though, Gaither has the higher ceiling and looks to be everything we would need or want in our LT going forward.

Even though it wasn't planned, things worked out for us in the end (getting Gaither instead of the desired Staley).

I agree with both of yous.

Hey CD - glad to see you over here.

What took you so long-lol.

Hey Trap,

I've been a member and lurker here for quite a bit, but the other board seems to just fit me a bit better -- I dunno.

Anywhoo, its good to know that my notoriously loooooong posts and my opinionated views are getting read all over the place. ;)

I agree that my negative opinion on him has carried over from pre-draft, and he is better hten I give him credit for, but....

I have a friend who is a 9ers fan, and when watching games together, whether 9er or Raven, every time he sees either Grubbs or Staley doing anything positive or negative he curses the York family for jumping in front of Baltimore to get the worse linemen... I have seen a handful of his games or so, and I think last year, Gaither was CLEARLY superior with a much brighter future. I expect Oher to be better then Staley. As positive as I can be about him is that he will likely be an average NFL starter, but he isn't there yet. Gaither, to me, is already better then average as a starting LT in this league.

FWIW, I'm not even that high on Grubbs, but he is still better then Staley, IMO of course.

Remember the days complaining that our FO never invested enough in our OL, thing of the past, that is for sure....

I agree CDiP, this board may feel at home if you stay awhile. The average poster IQ and tolerance is higher, the board software is leaps and bounds better, and the air of civility should allow you to fit in, IMO.

Jonboy, fair enough my friend.

As for this board, believe it or not I'm lurking over here quite a bit -- I guess just diffrent strokes.

And Jonboy, I definitely do recall the debates about Oz and his 'investment' or lack thereof along the O-Line. I think that Oz just had areas he thought were a bit more important (like totally restocking the D after the 'purge' of '02). Oz may've waited a bit too long to start addressing our O-line a few yrs back (just like some may feel he's waiting a bit too long to properly address the wideout group currently), but we cannot say that's an issue today Jonboy like you stated buddy, can we?

To close this, I think and have always thought that this organization knows what wins and what doesn't. Jonboy, you & I share so much of an ideology of this team that sometimes it seems that we're only a few guys whistlin'-in-the-wind against what the "average fan" thinks is right for our Ravens.

Keep up the good fight buddy!
