The Redskins opted out (http://www.profootballtalk.com/2009/05/29/skins-avoided-1-million-roster-bonus-by-cutting-jansen/) of Jansen's $1.35 million salary and $1 million signing bonus. Perhaps he would be interested in staying in this area and take a vet minimum contract.

His presence could help Oher develop better/faster.

I think he is pretty terrible right now, but has been pretty good in the past. Getting cut making that little from a team that needs RT help is not a good indicator he is any good, but as a street FA in season could be a good fill in if we are still thin at T.

i don't know if this year will be like last, but it seemed like JO was around to mentor gaither, especially in camp. after we freed willy, it might be nice to have a veteran presence on that OL if it's for cheap.

Maybe Willy will still show up and get mental reps, maybe even unretire, or Brett Favre at some point during the season if he stays in shape. Or gets in shape.

At vet minimum, I'd rather have Jansen (assuming he would pass the physical) over Anderson.

A vet on the OL....like the Center we just signed?

Oher isn't giving up that spot.

I doubt Terry or Cousins fail to make the 53 as well, but we may need some live bodies if they are hurting right now.

center is much different than tackle, it would be nice having a JO, WA, pace, jansen, etc to mentor these young bookends we have for their position

It turns out the Skins are actually eating an additional 1.7 mil to cut him. Not saving 1.7, or the 2.9 Big willy is saving us by retiring, but costing them a net loss of 1.7 mil in cap space, which once agains begs the question, what cap? How are they not 30 mil over right now?

The fact that they have NO depth to speak of and as a result never even come close to contending down the stretch might have something to do with it.

Jansen was good at one point, but he can't play anymore. There's no room for him here.

Good guy, I don't mean any disespect. But his career is over.

Not to mention that we may have to even cut a guy we have in house already... There is no room on the OL.

Jansen has experience and smarts, but the wear and tear have made him a shell of the player he used to be. His speed is gone and his mobility along with it, he does have strength left.
An UDFA pushed him out of starting(Heyer).
He probably can play another year as a solid but limited RT, very vulnerable to a speed rusher from his side and only able to do close seals for runs to his side. I like him but we have too much youth with developing potential to bring him in. I'm sure that if he wants to play another year that there will be a team who can find a use for him (either now or when injury happens), but not us. Veteran mentoring? Birk should be all we need there along with what Willie was able to pass on to the young core remaining.
In a way I'm looking at Jansen like I did with Flynn who did get picked up then cut before the season. There is a chance some team could extend him for another year but feel it will come with an injury.

The OL is done. We have ultra depth at every position and the key too a great OL is to be young and smart, not older and grizzled. LOL, I love the word grizzled. I think that like last year JO will be around and on call by the coaches if some mental reps are needed and who knows if Willie just might still be around also for that too. Probably not though. I think with the play of Gaither last year you saw a extremely gifted, but raw tackle become extremely polished in a short amount of time. I mean short. LT is 1.B on the difficulty meter next to QB for young talent developing and Gaither blew it out of the water. Even JO started at guard his first year. So I credit the line coaches and definately the time spent with JO in getting those young guys on the OL ready and polished for the season. They all were a pleasant surprises.

There is simply no rational reason whatsoever to even think about Jansen. Put a fork in him and say bye-bye.
