I am part of a generation that wasn’t forced to serve my country. Joining the Armed Forces is now a choice not a civic duty. Like so many others, I chose not to leave my family and friends to serve my country. I was and still am spoiled by the blanket of freedom that the veterans of war provided and continue to provide. Freedom is seemingly a birthright to all of us but to get to this point, unconscionable injuries were suffered and horrific casualties endured.

Today it is our civic duty to pay homage to those who sacrificed so much and to their families that experienced tremendous losses.

Warm sun beckons me - come and play.
A breeze the Flag unfolds.
Across my town, a bugle sounds
As the drumbeat slowly rolls.
I love this day when life is good
And blessings come in twos.
But I will not turn to food and fun
Until I’ve paid my dues.

For I am a veteran of war long past
And I will not forget
About brave friends now dead and gone
Whose memories linger yet.
For unlike me they never heard
Their babies cry or laugh.
They never saw their sweetheart’s smile
Nor lifted life’s full glass.

So, again today, I honor them
And remember every one.
I pause to thank my God again
For all that they have done.
And now I ask that you would pause
Before the beach or mall,
And join me in my slow salute
To those who gave their all
