View Full Version : OT-Movie: Any Given Sunday-Sports films...

Thought we needed something to keep us busy during the off season so....

I just watched the football flick, "Any Given Sunday" for the first time.

Thought it was cool that they gave nods of appreciation to some of the old time guys that made the NFL what it is today. Jim Brown played an assistant coach to Al Pacino and Dick Butkus played one of the opposing coaches.

In the big playoff game at the end of the film, I was shocked and pleased to see that the man playing the opposing head coach against Al Pacino was none other than Johnny Unitas.

I've seen most sports flicks and was surprised I'd never seen this one. I'd give it 2.5-3 stars out of 5. It was worth watching.

Also, what sports movies have you seen and would recommend?

It's a comedy - but Necessary Roughness is one of my all time favs.

When Samurai went 'ape shit' and kicked the crap outta the other teams O line I was busting up. ... mostly because I wanted to do that many times when I was playing football.

And there is a practice with a prison team that is pretty much made up of retired players. :jester:

"RUDY" immediately comes to mind. If that story doesn't inspire you, you're either dead or you live in Cleveland.

I have a tradition for the night before the draft. I watch Necessary Roughness, The Water Boy and The Replacements.

Necessary Roughness is one of the better football movies of all time in my opinion.
"Andre does not eat red meat because Andre is a vegitarian."
"Eat what ever the hell you want."

The Water Boy is funnier because of Adam Sandler. Just a good movie all the way around.

Some people aren't real high on The Replacements because of Reeves. I like it, though the plot is a little thin. The scene with the cheerleaders doing the sexy dance during the Detroit game was extra special.

The scene with Kathy Ireland in the shower by itself makes it worth the watch...

Any Given Sunday followed by the Replacements and Waterboy are my favorites.

There was a Replacements type move by the Raider players this past year. The cheerleaders were poledancing in the endzone and several of the Raider players and the Refs were checking out their butts--I got pictures it was hilarious.

the only good thing about the replacements was that it was filmed in Baltimore. its obvious that the people that made that movie didnt know anything about football. the stupidest thing in that movie was when they kicked the onside kick and the kicking team crazy LB recovered it (from the kicking team) and started running with it and reeves (who was the QB) tackled him and they were worried about the clock still running and called a time out to stop the clock. 1st the kicking team cant advance an onside kick and 2nd the clock would automatically stop after that play so there was no need to worry about the timeout

my favorite football movies are Varsity Blues and Friday Night Lights because it makes me remember my HS football days and how when players would get hurt the coaches would force them to play just to make there selves look good. and also how myself and other players on my HS team shouldnt have been playing but we took pain meds during the game to continue to play. I also really like Remember The Titans

I'd recommend "Brian's Song", although it is a tear-jerker.

ALL THE RIGHT MOVES, with Tom Cruise, was a really good football movie about high school football, one of my alltime favorites. REMEMBER THE TITANS, and RUDI were great movies, as well.

1. Seabiscuit - Not only a great sports movie, but such a wonderful story you have to take a step back and marvel that it was all true!

2. Field of Dreams -- This one strikes home because my father was a ball player in the minors for Cleveland and me being the rebel that I am, never latched on to baseball as a kid.

3. Miracle -- Again, along the same lines of Seabiscuit in that you could not write a better story and again, it's all true.

Major League!!! Yes!

What a great ensemble cast.

1st the kicking team cant advance an onside kick

Well just to be nit picky, The kicking team can advance an onside kick if it has been touched by the receiving team....thus creating a fumble.

Rookie of the Year is great because of Gary Busey (Sp?)

Major League

Field of Dreams.

The Rookie....Dennis Quaid as thirty-something Rookie Pitcher for the TB Rays

Rudy

Lets be honest folks, the better sports movies involve baseball rather than football.

Yeah there are probably better sports baseball movies than football movies but one of the best sports movies ever involved basketball:

Hoosiers.

Gene Hackman is great in that role and I love the story line where he recruits the alcoholic, down on his luck, Dad (Dennis Hopper?) straight as an assistant coach. It was especially good when he'd get thrown out of the game on purpose so that "Shooter" would have to take over..

Glad Seabiscuit was mentioned. Awesome movie.

I've never seen Necessary Roughness or Rudy. They are going on my "to see" list.

Yeah, it was a fumbled onside kick which crazy LB recovered. Don't remember them calling a TO, because once the kickoff play is over, the clock is automatically stopped. They were trying to tackle him because he was trying to run it back for a TD and just going in circles winding down the clock.

Necessary Roughness is understandable...but never seen Rudy? Not even one scene? Wow...that's got to be on the top 10, maybe even top 5, of all time sports movies. Got a ton of recognizeable actors in it too...Sean Astin, Jon Favreau, Charles Dutton, Vince Vaughan...

We'll do one for the 90's, 80's, 70's then lump the winners together...

Rocky Balboa (the 6th one) was pretty good actually. Stallone certainly made everyone forget about Rocky V with that one - a much better end to the franchise.

To enjoy a movie we have to suspend our disbelief. Everyone has different levels. To me a movie or book has to have a certain internal logic that sells me on it. The Replacements would have been a hair better if they had the rules down but it's not a deal breaker for me.

I read a poster recently who said he couldn't buy the character of (Leonard Nimoy) Spock in the new Star Trek because he had dentures and that dental science should have advanced much farther at that point in human history.

Give me a break! LOL.

There was a Disney movie about teenage girl twin basketball players that my daughter used to watch. When the girl was in the triple threat position and looking to drive the camera would cut to her feet. She would stutter step, lifting both feet off the floor while holding on to the ball. In other words whe would travel like 10 times before driving to the hoop. It was supposed to be the dramatic highpoint of the game. My son and I would practically fall on the floor laughing and my daughter (at that age) had no idea why it was so funny.

Now that's an example of a director/writer who should have done a little homework or had a b-ball consultant on set.

Let's not forget about "Eight Men Out", the story of the Black Sox. I'm not a big fan of baseball but that movie is just great.

"The Pistol" was also a good movie, though it was about basketball.

"Mystery, Alaska" is worth watching. A small town in Alaska host the New York Rangers for a hockey game.

I am actually going to have to agree with who ever said the Wrestler. It was very well done and really gives a true look at what happens to a majority of professional wrestlers when they finally are pushed out of the spot light. Only a few keep track of their money...or make an obscene amount of money so they can live well after the days in the ring are done. (See Hogan, Flair, Ricky "The Dragon" Steamboat, and Bret Hart.)

Also, still love WWE....Denver was stupid to double book the arena, McMahon isn't going back to Denver for a long time to come.

Forgot to mention one of my faves: The Bad News Bears with Walter Mathau. He was perfect in the role of Buttermaker.

Also, I just saw Diner for the first time. I can't believe I've never seen it. Loved the bridesmaids dresses in Colt blue and the Colts trivia marriage quiz.
