For those who hated Kornheiser in the booth on MNF. I think he'll be better. Almost anything will be better than Kornheiser treating MNF like a rundown on PTI.

Good move. Kornheiser was too negative. Billick would have been a better choice than Gruden, but I'll take the improvement nonetheless.

Huge upgrade. I like Chucky. He is expressive, funny and forgot more football than Tony K ever knew.

Agreed, Kornheiser was an annoyance. I'm looking forward to Chucky's commentary...should be interesting.

Very glad Kornheiser quit.

I wish that was all that happened.

Tirico and Jaws as a pair is just fine. There is no need for a 3rd man in that booth.

MNF has tinkered with "funny" 3rd wheels and it does nothing for the broadcast IMO.

Gimme a no nonsense play by play guy and someone like Jaws or Collinsworth and I'm all set. The football entertains me without some "funnyman" making dumb comments.

Gruden was awful on draft day so I'm not hopeful that he'll add anything positive.

However, anything is an upgrade over Kornheiser...

I think you hit the nail on the head, as the past indicates the future. Although I think Gruden knows a lot about football and seems to be a good communicator (and would appear to be much better than Kornheiser), I don't think he will be that good.

Why?

Gruden wants to coach again - too young and too good a resume not to get an awesome offer from someone a year or two down the road. So anything he says that's direct but a negative will offend a (a) player (b) GM (c) Owner (d) coach, all the people who will either hire him, give their opinion on hiring him, or give their opinion on whether they would play for him.

Will he call it like it is on the talent of a poor team who is 0-7? Will he call out WRs who are dogging it? Will he tell us how a team was very poorly prepared for an important game? Will he point out players that are overmatched and hurting their team?

I doubt it.

Look for a lot of vanilla in Gruden's game - which as the 3rd announcer on MNF will be a snoozer.

With the retirement of Madden and Kornholler going away I won't want to mute my TV to watch games anymore.
Kornholler was a tool and offered nothing positive to the game - he always kinda reminded me of Kyles cousin from south park.

I have never seen Gruden on TV, but a freakin' chimp would have been better than Kornheiser. The dude was a complete tool, and I am extremely glad he's gone. Now I don't have to hear his BS so I can also hear Jaws

Precisely my thoughts/fears but far more succinctly and eloquently put than I'd have managed. I was just gonna say there's a huge danger he'll be a kiss ass in the booth which would be just as nauseating and annoying as Kornheiser.

Bingo.

As I said before, why is there this insistence for a 3 man booth? The biggest head scratcher to me is that Gruden isn't a "funny man" that the networks have tried to shove down our throats. And really, what kind of ratings spike did those type guys get anyway? People are gonna watch the game to watch the game. All the peripheral stuff is meaningless.

But the decision to add Gruden, who's obviously more like Jaws than Kornheiser, makes no sense not only because what you stated but also because there is already a great, non biased, Xs and Os guys in the box.

Gruden on NFLN on draft day should've shown that he belongs on the sidelines, not the booth. Instead he gets a gig on MNF? ESPN continues to go downhill IMO.

I'll reserve judgement, but no high hopes for anything great. I feel that his probably return to coaching will temper down finger pointing.

Wonder if they even considered Goose?
We have seen non-players like the arrogant toupee, the totally out of place Miller, and Kornheiser who is good in a number of settings, just not that one.

We have seen former players and to the best of my memory they have all been offense... QBs Meredeth, Theisman, Jaworski, even a guard Dierdorf and a rb Gifford.
No idea how Goose would be confined to a booth but he should be able to provide humor, and it is not like he doesn't understand what is going on in the trenches.

I'm perfectly fine with Kornhole leaving, but replacing him with Gruden seems like an odd choice to me. They certainly don't seem to have much in common. They already have Jaws, who can play the football insider, so what exactly does Gruden bring that's different?

I also don't know (as others have pointed out) why they need a third person anyway. Tirico is a competent play-by-play guy and Jaws is an excellent color analyst, so what's the point of a third guy? It just brings too much chatter into the booth. Another reason why Sunday Night Football is better.

No improvement IMO, just a sidewise move. I don't think I'll cotten to Chuckie in the booth. Hope he gets a coaching job next season.

my joy is due to Kornhole being gone. i honestly do not think Grudden will be good in the booth at all. but we will not have to hear Kornhole's stupidity.

Do mean that MNF will now have announcers who provide insight and knowledge and not third rate humor?

Sounds like a great move.

I still think it'll be pretty watered down and lacking real insight.
