Some VERY good news going into next season.

http://www.baltimoresun.com/sports/football/bal-sp.preston27mar27,0,2266465.column

I was a bit skeptical, given the reports we had been hearing up to this point. This direct quote has pretty much sold me we will see him at 100% come next season:

"Before he was injured, Gregg was squatting 405 pounds; he is back to that point now. His right leg is still a little stronger than his left, but not much.

"I had this knee scoped twice, hoping to clean things up, but that didn't work. It was just bone on bone," Gregg said. "But now I can bend it at full range and there has been no swelling at all. There is no more time for lying around.""

Wow!!
That's pretty impressive.
I thought the guy was done myself.
We haven't heard anything at all for quite some time, and what you did hear normally wasn't positive.
The micro fracture stuff doesn't always work, and I figured somebody of his size and weight would make that surgery even less likely to be successful.

Compound what appears to be his positive health situation with what is definitely a high level of motivation, and we are ready to go in that area of the defense.

It will be like adding another starter we didn't have last year.

That was a nice piece by Preston. Kelly has always been one of my favorite players, a real fox-hole kind of guy. He'll give you 200% on every play, and then some - no quit in that guy! I just hope the off-year surgery/rehab will sustain him through a 16 game schedule, and beyond. Welcome back, Buddy Lee!

Gregg is a class-act kind of player, his work ethic is amazing. He is one of the players that should be in Pro Bowl year after year, but gets snubbed...nonetheless he keeps giving his all.

I'm glad to hear he's recovering this well.

Great news about our all-time unsung hero. Here is the quote I really like ...

"That's one great rotation with Justin Bannan, Haloti Ngata and Kelly Gregg," Ravens defensive coordinator Greg Mattison said recently. "I think we should be able to get pressure up the middle on the pass rush because we're going to have some fresh legs."

Will we see Haloti develop into the interior pass-rushing force we all know he can be? Here's hopin'! :beer1:

i pray he can play. you have to love him. the dude is a little machine. hopefully the knee can hold up once the real training of the daily grind starts up.

We did get by without him, but Buddy Lee is a difference maker. Not a pass rusher really but he gets a push, and Bannan as a backup did provide some pass rush, also Dwan Edwards should be able contribute there on 3rd downs (even though he only has one NFL sack and it was almost by accident).

yeah, getting him and dwan back will be huge. i really liked this quote from that article:

"According to Newsome, the Ravens are having a hard time keeping Gregg out of the building even when he isn't supposed to be there. Gregg lifts weights five days a week, at least two hours a day. If he isn't in the weight room, he is looking at film or rehabilitating his left knee."

Sounds all nice and flowery.

Not to be a pessimist, but believe all these reports at your own risk. Microfracture surgery is something that very few come back from.

Squatting and playing football over a greuling season are too different things.

I hope he makes it back, we can use him and he's a true Raven.

Great news if it proves to be true. I just hope the situation doesn't quickly deteriorate once he gets in the grind.

"I feel great, so good that I believe I may have extended my career maybe two more years."

Do you think he means 2 years from now, or two extra years added to a career length that he already has in mind?

Good news. O-Lines are gonna have their hands full with Gregg and Ngata on the line at the same time.

My favorite Raven not named Ray Lewis sounds mentally and physically refreshed and ready to once again overachieve!

You gotta love Buddy Lee... "Can't Bust Em'!"

Anything Gregg gives us from here on out is just gravy.

He will be 33 years old a little after the season starts, when most Dlineman are lucky to make it to the age of 30 in the NFL.Its been a great run,but he is at the very end of his career healthy or not.

The same line about "feeling great" has been said many times by players coming off a major knee injury at his age.

Anyome remember Peter Boulware? Knee injury, thought he was ready to go, got on the field and just couldnt do it anymore.

It happens to the best of them,it was a nice run but I think expectations should be pretty low in general for what we expect him to contribute now and in the future.

Unfortunately, Dan Cody never said that...:(

I remember the Boulware talk too.

You know, how his knee was progressing well etc.....

I hope Gregg makes it back, but I still have major doubts. Knee injuries are bad news for anyone. Especially a 300+ pound nose tackle in the NFL.

Microfracture take about 18 months to work if it is going too. Glad to see it seems to be working, even though it just delays the inevitable--a replacement.

I'm going with the cautious optimism as well. He's not a 25 year old with a small knee issue. He's 33 and was coming back from a knee problem that was, as he put it himself, "bone on bone".

I definately want to see Gregg and Haloti Ngata keeping the middle of the line running back free. And maybe the plan is that he isn't an every down DT anymore to save that knee.

But there is a reality to remember. We'll see if that reality catches up to him this year.

I'm assuming from the article that he's going to come back strong until proven otherwise.

We'll be able to rotate him in and out more with Haloti so that we'll reduce the amount of snaps that he's in the lineup for.

I look forward to short yardage situations with both Haloti and Gregg on the line. :)
