Just heard on Outside The Lines that the NFL 09 season will open with the Titans at Ravens for the Thursday night game. Guess I was wrong and the league listened to our request. Says alot that we open the season and not the SB champs, Pissburgh.

Are you sure you heard that right?

The Pittsburgh Post-Gazette is reporting that the Steelers host Tennessee in the Thursday night season opener, Sept. 10.

I'm pretty sure. Bob Levy said it right as they were going of the air. Unless he mis spoke and meant Steelers.

Had to be an error. If that were the case Shittsburgh Squeelers would go ballistic.

Yeah, because everyone knows the Superbowl champs always get the first primetime game the following season - unless, of course, it's 2001 and you're the Ravens.

We're not playing opening night unless it's @ Pitt.

We could've been playing on Thursday night; but the management is, I am ashamed to say, afraid of losing again to the Stillers on National TV. We should want to play them in the damn streets if necessary - hell they beat us 3 times last year!

At least the Flack-Attack will have a few games to take flight before we go back into the lion's den.

But yeah, I am kinda ashamed that our organization opted out of that matchup...:grbac:

Right. The Raven's brass is scared of a team we lost to by 3, 4 and 9 points in three games with a rookie QB because they don't want to get beaten again. :261695: It has NOTHING to do with the fact that, if we opened in Pittsburgh this year, it would be the FOURTH time in FIVE primetime meetings that we had to travel TO Pitt.

A little equality in scheduling home and away games is all we are asking.

it isn't fair that we're always playing a nationally televised game in Pissburgh and not in Baltimore:eyes:
I see it as they always want to put Pissburgh's home game against us on prime time! I have no problem with our organization requesting not to play a NTgame in Pitt:rolleyes:

I appreciate your differing opinion. However, imo, it is really embarassing to not want to play these guys on national TV, on their home turf! Being given the opportunity to punch these guys in the mouth, on national TV, first game of the year, in front of their home crowd, after they beat us, the so-called Baltimore 'Bullies', three times last year is a real embarassment!! What kind of message does this send to the team, I ask?! I'm sorry, but this is NOT a good way to start off the season, i.e. letting the Steelers know that we're afraid to play them in prime time! If this was your call, Harbs, my opinion of you has really gone South - Billick never would've shyed away from this game! In fact, I remember one year, when he should've rested his starters, but chose instead to play his starters against the Steelers last game of the season - no way did he want to lose that game! But then, that is what made Billick a winning coach, imho, and brought us a SB trophy!

I see both sides of this coin. I don't want to look like we are afraid to play them, and honestly it's pretty obvious we aren't given our recent efforts against them. At the same time, I'm tired of having to play them away in primetime.

See I agree in a way and then on the other hand I think it may have been a smart decision. Like you said it gives Flak a few warm up's and the team a chance to gain some confidence going into there. I think a tough loss or blow out early on in Pit. could cause a little confidence issue. Not making an argument, just wanted your opinion. You have some pretty good ones so just wanted to get your thoughts.......

I think you guys are really missing the boat on this. Ravens aren't scared, that's ridiculous. Look at the schedule for the answer. Due to the Orioles schedule, if the Ravens are away for opening day, then the Ravens MUST play three of the first four weeks away to not conflict with the Os. Who wants to start with such an unbalanced schedule, plus losing prime dates for the fans where the crowds spend more money?

Ravens are trying to get a more balanced schedule, plain and simple.

We'll simply have to agree to disagree here.

This is correct. Out of the south division, I believe we play the Colts since they finished 2nd in the division like us (just our luck). At least I think we might get them at home though.

We'll simply have to agree to disagree here.

from what I have heard it came down to two main reasons, the O's have home games the following two weeks which would have meant we played 3 straight road games to open the year, and our FO said from a business standpoint they wanted it to be a national game in Baltimore this year to make money as we have played there in primetime 3 of the past 4 years. If you really think Baltimore is scared to play there you are crazy it simply comes down to money and why should we have to lose out on money every year to satisfy those inbreads up there.

From what I've heard, schedule requests are common-place in the NFL. In fact, I wouldn't be surprised if it was a weighty schedule request by the Broncos that actually cost the Ravens the MNF home opener following Super Bowl XXXV, as was the tradition at the time.

It's also the reason the Ravens got shipped to Dallas on a Saturday night last season to close Dallas Stadium down for good. Jerry Jones wanted the Ravens, and he got them.

That the Sun and/or other news outlets picked up the story and ran with it was the reason this non-issue became a bigger deal than it is.

But to help the Ravens cause, in reality it's hard for any objective observer to view the Ravens schedule last season as completely in-tune with the NFL's goal of competitive balance, given the fiasco in Houston.
