Well it appears as if the Terps have at least a fighting chance taking a 3 point lead into the half against California.
We have to take care of the ball better and attack the rim more though if we expect to win. We simply can't gamble on matching Cal in the 3-point department in the second half.
Gary will make adjustments at halftime, change suits and have the Terps ready for the last 20 minutes!
FEAR THE TURTLE!!
P.S. I wonder if Kyle Boller is at the game?

LOL! Better question: Who's he rooting for?
Actually, that question sucks and the answer is obvious.....

And before any of you cynical Boller-Bashers say it, no Kyle did not attempt to make a half-court shot from his knees at halftime.
But this is turning out to be one hell of a game!

Up by 15 with less than 5 to play - this is pleasing me.

You ain't just whistling Dixie, buddy!
If we can take care of the ball and run down the clock, we should be headed to the next round against a Memphis team that has to be concerned about their scare against Cal State Northridge.

They let the Terps back in and once again proved why the ACC is so tough, the PAC 10 is butter soft and fuck duke. Gary and MD can D up the 3 when there is not a lead block to get open.

After watching Memphis play today, I think the Terps have a very real chance to take them down.

Depends on whether Vasquez is running hot or cold, too.

They are going to have shoot the 3 well, because I think the MD zone will shut them down inside like it did to Wake.

My boss had all the damn web channels blocked just for March Madness. Trying to get radio reception in a damn cubicle was hell but for some reason 1300 AM got better reception then 105.7
I think Maryland has a chance against Memphis if they are cold from the three which they seemed to be today. It seems like Memphis is a little overconfident and were rushing a lot of shots today. My bracket already got messed up when LSU decided to show up today... there goes my Yahoo 1,000,000....

Hey - sneak a win against Memphis and who knows what would happen. I think they could beat either Marquette or Mizzou too. I'm just enjoying the ride.

Good offensive showing, although I feel like we are fortunate that Cal was off from beyond the arc. We'll need to play near perfect to Memphis, but anything is possible.

I think Maryland's defense was a big difference in Cal's low shooting percentage beyond the arc. Classic Gary Williams defense at work!

I loved the pace they played at today. They were fast and aggressive the entire game. It really kept Cal off guard.
To beat Memphis, we're gonna have to play as well as we did against N.Carolina, which probably means a stellar game from Vasquez.

You hit the nail on the head, man.
We need our swagger to be turned up to "11" on Saturday.
Defense and offense must be clicking and if we can hang around late...Watch out Dukie V!!

Nothing would make me happier then to see mister Clean beat mister dirtbag. (Williams vs Calipari)
The Terps can do this, they have beaten better teams this year. They will have to be 110% but it is doable. All depends on D.

Gotta give Gary and the Terps props for:
1) The full and 3/4 court press that forced a lot of turnovers and got Cal out of rhythm.
2) The 1/2/2 zone that bothered Cal. The nice thing about that zone is that it has Vasquez up top. He has good height for a college guard to contest the three and the instincts to know when to drop down and be in position to collapse on the post pass.
3) The play of Vaquez, Hayes, Bowie, and Neal. The Terps are clearly a better team when Vasquez plays the point. He knows how to keep the dribble alive, run plays, make assists and when to abandon the set play and take what the d gives you.
The only thing I think Md. fans are overlooking is that Cal missed more easy three's than they normally do. The game would have been much closer, if they shot their usual percentages.
But live by the three, die by the three......

He has been a lot more consitent of late. That also scares me a little cause I'm thinking he might be due for an off game. (Dave LaP makes warding off evil sign)

That and which Greivis shows up?:229031_confused2:
It has been a while since bad Greivis blew a game. His turnovers are way, way down, and he has never played with more confidence and control. If he comes close to dropping 30 again, MD is going to win. If he puts up 20, 8 boards and 7 assists, MD is going to win.
Neal has really stepped his game up. His screens are as much of a weapon as his 3 pointers, that have been almost Dukishly deadly.
Someone also seems to have inspired Hayes. It was not long ago he was just a turnover waiting to happen or a brick to fast break the other way open shot misser. Now he is a playmaker, and viable ACC starter.

I think that pressing attacking defense wore the Cal guards down quicker than normal and it affected the accuracy of the trifecta.
Every time they looked up there was a red MARYLAND up in their grills and a hand in their faces.

Great D game, but I don't expect them to get by Memphis. I have Memphis winning it all in one of my two brackets.
Big players play big in big games. I'm HEAVY on OK in both brackets simply based on the fact that Griffen is the best player in college bball IMNSHO.

Breaking the press really does take the legs from the shooters, but that is most likley not a great strategy vs Memphis. They are big enough to throw over the top and get fast break and ones. Maybe a little one man press to slow them down and tire out the point, but they should be too deep and athletic to wear down with pressure and do not try to rely on the 3 like Cal.

They had 30 minutes of struggles vs the 15 seed. If they start out like that vs the Terps it will be over.

Good points all around.
Tempo was a huge key in the game and alternating their press coverage kept Cal out of sync.
This is the most that Gary has used the zone and he should be busting it out again against the Tigers. It's been an effective weapon.
Vasquez's move to the point is important because he keeps the ball in the hands of your best player. They can run screen for him up top and he can distribute. His decision making is vastly improved from the past season and in general the Terps are taking care of the ball with few turnovers.
Memphis will look to push tempo as well and look to press. Handle the pressure and maybe the youth of Memphis will rear its ugly head.
Hayes and Bowie appeared conifdent and didn't hestitate with their jumpers or drives. Neal has blended into an almost Lambier like role (minus the cheap shots) of a big who can hit the long range shot.
Cal's undoing was their 3 point shooting. It what got them in the tourney and on a cold night it did them in.
They have a shot against Memphis. Keep turnovers down and it could be in the cards.

Agree, but a great point was brought up today by a buddy of mine. They were despondent about not getting a 1 seed in the selection, and looked like a lifeless team for most of it. Odds were good that if they were coming out flat, they'd either get beaten, or use it as a wake-up call.
You see what they did the last 5-10 minutes of that game? I think they're awake now...

They did to a Morgan State type team what the Terps should have done, but over the last 10 games MD has played a lot better, and a lot better comp than Memphis is or has.

Terps live and die with GV, and Memphis plays some of the best D in the country. They shut GV down, Terps are toast. He has a big game, Terps could romp.
We'll see I guess. I know shit about cbb so I'll sit quietly on the sidelines for the rest of this conversation...

that sounds about right. Grievis may not have to score a ton, but as long as he draws and kicks properly and anchors the top of the zone, we should be good to go.

Memphis could have won that game by 40. Anyone that thought the Terps had a chance against Memphis was nuts. I was rooting for them but they are out of the Terps league. Get some talent next year Gary, nice job coaching but we need some more guys that can shoot and defend...
