Chris Carr, a free-agent return specialist and backup cornerback, has reached an agreement in principle with the Ravens, a league source confirmed today.
Carr, 25, will sign a two-year, $5 million contract on Monday at Ravens headquarters.
He will provide depth at cornerback and could replace Yamon Figurs as a kick returner. Last season with the Tennessee Titans, Carr was third in kickoff-return average (28.1 yards) and eighth in punt-return average (10.1) in the AFC.
Carr played under Ravens secondary coach Chuck Pagano when both were with the Oakland Raiders.
The addition of Carr will come on the day when the Ravens are expected to finalize the release of cornerback Samari Rolle.
Another former Raider....

This could be a good signing. I would definately take 28 ypr on kickoffs, and he's only 25.
And if Corey Ivy is leaving, then he may be able to fill in at nickle as well.

we've gotta have the youngest and fastest secondary ever assembled. not saying that's a good thing, but nobody else can touch fabian, foxy, and racecarr with speed and youth.

Hopefully they'll play with "Brains" unlike CMac during Stooler games....

This is a great signing! Right on Oz!
let it go folks...he was a great Raven for many years
Who hurt the "team" at key moments of the game. I'm merely pointing out that I hope the new guys don't fall for Wards bullshit. You know he'll test the new guys asap.....

Actually I think CMac mixed it up with Plaxico Burress much more than Hines Ward in his time...

Chris McAlister, when on the field, helped a thousand times more than he hurt. You are, and I am a little pained agreeing with Raven Nurse here, just wrong.

While you guys have a big circle jerk, I think you both missed the point of my post. I never said CMac didn't contribute or was't a great CB for the Ravens. I merely pointed out that he had some "mental midget" plays against the Stoolers . I only hope the new guys are shown the "tricks" that Ward likes to do against opposing defenses and not to fall for it like CMac would on occasion. Thats it. Am I still "just wrong"?

Foxy and Racecarr... Did you make that up?!? That -does- sound like a bad ass secondary :ww:

Yup. You're still just wrong. On the field, McAlister was one of the elite CB's in the NFL.
You claim he was inadequate somehow. Fine. It's your argument, now back it up. With facts. Good luck!

I have to agree.
People tend to accent on the times C-Mac got beat or made a mistake, without remembering that 9 times out of 10 McAlister shut down that side of the field or made opposing QB's concentrate on the other side.
And it wasn't Hines Ward that got under McAlister's skin. It was Chad Johnson. And the one time I met Chad Johnson (back in my video game website days I met him at an EA Madden launch party), we talked about McAlister and Chad said he still thought Chris was a top CB.
Bottom line, Chris McAlister was a top 3 corner here. Healthy, I still contend he's a top flite CB.

In another post here last week, I did post the top 10 combine 40 times of all time (all positions, Deion is #1 at 4.12!), and both Foxworth and Washington are on the list!

Carr is looking like a great pick up by Ozzie! We are gonna have one hell of a secondary this season!!
Another good pick by the Oz. Carr is gonna give us good field position like Yamon never could.
I swear Yamon thought there was an invisible wall at the 20 yard line.

Carr is a good addition to the return game, should help offset the loss of Leonhard.
Let's not fool ourselves into thinking he does much more the boost the depth at secondary though. We're getting very fast at CB, but I am a little worried about our lack of tough, physical CBs. Washington and Foxworth are not going to be "shutdown" CBs, they're just going to be able to go toe to toe with the fast WRs and make good plays. Walker is a tough corner, just makes some boneheaded mistakes. Carr is still a work in progress at CB, he's likely going to help as depth as a NB or Dime Back, hopefully we can coach him up to more. But I think his main value is going to come at ST.

If Landry is back and healthy, I expect to see 3 safeties on the field more often.

I think we are seeing Mattison's influence here. Mattison likes smaller faster Corners that have great recovery speed. This will allow him to be more aggressive on blitzes while playing tight coverage. You will not see receivers giving huge cushions the way they did during Rex's days. Carr can be every bit of the Nickel back that Ivey was.
He is also considered as one of the top returners in the league. This will allow the Ravens to jettison Figurs and save his cap space and roster spot. It was clear Figurs was never going to develop into a receiving threat. Peter King listed it as a great move in his MMQ today.

My concern with this change in strategy is that we play in a division with guys like Hines Ward, Chad Johnson, and Braylon Edwards (ok, emphasis on the first two)...guys that are big physical receivers, not really barn burners. Fast corners are going to protect us against the deep threats, but we don't really have anyone that can be effective playing physical coverage on these big WRs. We won't give them a cushion, but all they'll have to do is just outleap or battle our CBs for the pass. With CMac, we had someone who could battle them for it. Walker is probably the closest we're going to get to that now. I guess we'll just see how the move plays out.
As for his skills as a return man, I do agree. While he's never had a TD return, he has solid YPR and was among tops in the league for his average last year. Again, I see him as a Leonhard sort of influence in the return game...Leonhard wasn't breaking the big return, but whenever he touched the ball, we got significant field position, and that is key. Figurs has breakaway speed, but his instincts are just shot. We might keep him around to see if he can do anything at WR, but my guess is he's a long shot for the roster now. Cap space won't be that much for him, but his roster spot will be huge, it'll let us carry a significant player.

I agree completely which is why I think we'll purse a 1st day CB. I see Carr as a 4th or 5th guy. But like the guy before said. This is all part of a new type defense.. We won't be seeing our guys getting burned for deep plays hardly anymore because all these guys have good recovery speed. But Maybe that 6'3 corner (something Smith) is in the Draft plans for Ozzie...

Hines Ward is not big. He is physical but he certainly is not big. He is 6' 200lbs. Chad Johnson is 6'1" 192 lbs. Braylon Edwards definitely qualifies as big and physical.
That being said the Ravens D held up just fine last year utilizing Fabian Washington and Samari Rolle. Samari Rolle is 1 inch taller and 10lbs lighter than Foxworth and Washington. Does 1 inch really make that much of a difference? It is not like they are 5'9". I also see Santonio Holmes as more of threat than Ward.

Hah! If only you'd said, "I think Chris McAlister is an asshat," we could have agreed at the start.
More than most, I am glad to wave goodbye to the jerks, regardless of the talent they brought to the table.
