I know stats don't exactly mirror reality, but they do an ok job at approximating what happened. Here are two stat lines that are interesting:

G GS Comp Att Pct Yds Avg TD Int Sck Rate Att Yds Avg TD
2006 McNair 16 16 295 468 63.0 3,050 6.5 16 12 14 82.5 45 119 2.6 1
2008 Flacco 15 15 240 405 59.3 2,674 6.6 14 12 30 78.2 52 180 3.5 2

The biggest difference between these two years is that Flacco has taken 14 more sacks than McNair did. Aside from that, Flacco compares well against what McNair did in '06. McNair has thrown for more yards, but he also threw 63 more passes. I'm pretty sure that Flacco has faced stronger defenses than McNair faced.

Looking forward to people's comments.

The beauty of this is that:

a. Joe is learning more about the NFL and is adjusting to the pro game
b. Every game, he knows his offense better
c. The young OL is good and could be one of the best in the business next year

2009 could be better than 2008, and 2008 still has the potential to be very special.

Interesting.

One area I would add just to either clear or confuse the issue is the receivers.

Moore, Darling. vs Williams, Figurs
On a side note DvD has 15 catches in 11 games for KC this year, Williams has 13 in 6 games. (Figurs has 1 catch, which is one more than DvD in 2006)

Heap had 73McN catches, 36 this year, looks like most of the completion difference could be here.

Ovie had 21 catches for McN, McClain has 19 this year (and 6 for Lorenzo)

The biggest difference in the 2 teams was the run game this year gets the short yardage on plays that would have been passes to Heap. Mason also can run other routes than a 2 yard out, and the OC uses more 5 step drops, and vertical routes.

The fact than McNair did not actually do very much and we stil won 13 games is what led me to believe all we needed was a competent vet QB to get back into contention.

I cant wait til 09, especially if we get another WR.

Mason has nearly 1,000 yds and still isn't a TO type receiver.

Give Joe one of those and watch out.

Our run game is 4th best.

The Ravens rank #2 on the ground, and when you factor in the fact that a FB has had most of the carries, it is not hard to imagne they would be #1 with a healthy feature back hitting those same holes.

We are #2 in rushing, but our YPC is quite a bit down the list (T-18th).

P.S. can you believe that the Stooler YPC rushing rank - 26th? It's true.

I really think the 2 stats together make it look even more impressive. I figure if they are the #2 rushing team in the NFL with a FB, if they had a healthy feature back that would have broke a lot more 20 yard gains off of the same blocking. Or if we had the vertical passing game in effect all year to compliment, they would have faced a lot less 8 man fronts.

There are not many teams that knock you off the ball and put people on the ground the way our blockers have this year. The only teams I have seen do it like us are NY and the Titans, and maybe the Falcons, but all those teams had pro bowl runners breaking off long runs every week. McClain was getting nothing but ugly yards when the D knew he was coming most of the year.

Confused.. DW was a bigger factor than Moore and DvD together in 2006, especially late that season.

I think it is hard to compare. Different opponents and players. I give the edge to McNair, though.

McNair did have 3 late comebacks games, Clowns, Bolts and Titans. Its the other way around this year.. Titans and 2xSteelers. Maybe this is the difference.

And Jamal and our runninggame was pathetic in 2006..20-25th? Now it is a top five unit.

I think Mason, Clayton, DW and Heap did better job overall in 2006.

Our OL did a good job in passprotection in 2006 now its doing a lot better job for our RBs. Overall I think the 2008-OL is better and at least more talented.

Anyway in 2006 we (and Steve) did beat those Steelers 58-7, as for big moments.. thats probably my biggest moment after our SB win.

It would have been interesting to see what Boller or circa 2006 McNair would have done in Cams offense. I don't know about anyone else but I have little doubt their numbers would be better across the board. How much better ? Not sure....

IIRC, Kyle Boller was supposed to be the next Steve McNair as per the YBR forums.
