I have been less than impressed w/ this guy from day 1.

Does he get another year in 2009 or should they cut him after 2008?

He can't catch and he sucks on KR/PR.
I think he needs to be able to do one or the other to keep a spot on the roster.

Thoughts?

I never liked the decision to keep him over BJ Sams. A new returner should be on our off-season shopping list.

The guy appears 'soft' on returns; i.e. he does not run with the 'reckless abandon' needed to return kicks. I would've stuck with BJ Sams.

He seems to run to the sidelines a lot and afraid to take a hit. I watch enough other games to see a major diff btn him and even avg. KR/PR guys.

I say bullshit guys. Yamon Figurs is a talented returner capable of going all the way. He's proved it in the past. Our special teams haven't given him many decent lanes in the last 6 or 7 games. It's our special teams blocking that has been sucky.

He also has the speed to be a threat at WR although he is still a project for that position.

you dont cut a guy on his rookie deal unless it's neccessary, and it's not there yet. Would it be nice to get a corner that has return capabilities, sure, but Yamon stays.

I liked Sams, but come on, he's not even playing right now. If he was a better option, someone would pick him up.

Plus Sams was injury prone and too many run-ins with the law.

I'd like to see Jim Leonhard returning more kicks/punts.

BUST. He needs a very big camp next year to keep a roster spot. We have quite a few guys better than him, but they are needed at other jobs. He isnot worth a roster spot at this point, we can get someone better.

What about Zib, he was a monster at ND returning kicks and he obviously loves to hit and get hit.

That's a good point 52...I wonder why Zibs hasn't gotten any touches on kick returns. It's not like Figurs has even been playing OK...he's been pretty poor most of the year.

I'm not sure that returning kicks is something you can really teach. I believe it was The Tuna who said he always drafted return men from smaller colleges because it was just something you're born with. Didn't matter what level you were doing it at, the talent shows.

Now as for keeping him, I think he needs to show something on offense to keep his roster spot after his rookie contract is up.

B.J. Sams is playing for the Kansas City Chiefs. He has played 7 punt returns and 9 kickoff returns. With not so impressive results.

I agree, he has done enough to live out that deal, but he has to show more to get any further. I'd probably keep him as a RFA as well, if only for his skills as a gunner. He certainly needs to be pushed harder, and I wouldn't mind seeing someone else back ther on punts now.

You know, last year when he was getting to the 40 yard line consistently and scoring touchdowns, no one was calling for his head or screaming for BJ Sams.

Remember the dude spent time injured this year too. Give it a little more time. Don't forget as well there are 11 other guys on the field that need to block for him.

Let's see how the rest of the season plays out before we cut him, huh?

Thanks you for a dose of reason.

When the entire ST unit is leaving steaming piles on the field every week, it seems silly to me single out one player.

And I am not saying that Figurs is in fact the answer. IMO, We simply cannot make that decision because the other 10 folks out there are not doing their job to allow him to break way.

I'm in the camp that YF isn't 100%.

BJ Sams has been injured the past two seasons and was cut from the KC Chiefs, it looks to be the grass is greener on the other side type of thing. Figurs doesn't look to have the same burst he's had in the past and he's never had the shake that some of the great returners have had.

30% of all 3rd rounders bust out of the backup roles to start. Buster Davis and Mo Clarett did not make it through one training camp before getting cut. That is about as much of a bust as you can have with a 3rd rounder. Devard Darling and Musa Smith are/ were typical 3rd round guys with talent and potential, but not really starters.

Figurs speed is special. He looked really good in the preseason before he got hurt he was working as the #2 WR, and had some big returns showing improved patience and change of direction skills. He has been disapointing so far this regular season, but as a second year guy who has been hampered by injury all year, it is way too soon to think about getting rid of him, but not crazy to think about benching him on KRs until he shows that same speed that got him drafted.

I would consider other options at KR for now, Figurs running 5 yards and getting tackled every time isn't helping the team. Leonhard is slower I am sure but shows more of a burst and should be the man until Figurs gets healthy.

Since when was YF scoring TDs last year?

I am almost 100% sure he had one punt return for a TD vs Arizona and that was it.

Actually he had 1 PR for a TD and 1 KR for a TD in 2007.
That's not lighting it up if you ask me.

But it's more about getting decent returns, not TDs. He just seems timid.

1) That's more than most rookies not named Devon Hester was able to do.

2) You also are discounting the field position he was constantly giving us.

Last year he was better than BJ Sams. He's been hurt. I'm not ready to pull the plug on him yet.

Pulling the plug might be premature.

However, it's clear he's not 100% and it's hurting the team. We do have other options including a guy in Leohnard who, when Figurs was out, showed that he was more than capable of returning kicks. He headed straight up field and wasn't giving us negative returns.

Sorry, but Figurs isn't working right now and I don't know why he hasn't been pulled.
