View Full Version : Why Not Rex?!

Given that it is obvious by now that the corporate brain trust wanted all along a young candidate (with or without HC experience), why was Rex not given serious consideration?! Yea, I know everyone would say that the inmates run the asylum; but, hey, let's give Rex more credit than this. He understands the responsibilities inherent in the job, and he also deserves a shot?! He's been a loyal and dedicated coach, so why not?

I really think Bisciotti wants to clean house, and that includes Rex. I know they interviewed him for the HC job, but they also fired him, along with the rest of Billick's staff. I'm not sure how serious they were about hiring him as the HC, frankly.

I couldn't agree more. I am not with you or anyone else about the asylum part, still think whole thing is a joke, but it was not his job to control players, it was to coach the D period, that was Billicks job.

Suggs was on ESPN News earlier (wearing a Yankees cap, I might add) and said he wanted "Double R" back as head coach ... that reason alone is why we SHOULDT hire him as HC!
Rex represents the status-quo of huge egos being fed by the coaching staff. No thanks!

I don't agree that it wasn't his job to control his defensive players. Part of coaching a unit is to establish the rules by which these guys conduct themselves. That said, I believe the reason he was not given serious - or more serious - consideration was as Highwater said a desire to break with the old regime. I think it's been pretty clear for some time that there was a schism between the defense and the offense. If that is to be mended there must be a coach in charge who is not specifically aligned with either side. Were Ryan to be appointed HC it would clearly signal to the defense that they won. Besides, I wasn't that impressed with the way Ryan adjusted his game plans when half the first string defense was out with injuries. It's easy to be the coach of a stellar unit when all the pieces are in place. IMO Ryan would be a bad choice.

At first I was a big supporter of Rex getting the job, and I certainly wouldn't have a problem with it, but I think it's important to remove every aspect of the old regime and start fresh. I also think it's important that the team, which had obvious discipline problems in the last year on the field, not automatically have one of their buddies calling the shots. This team doesn't need more of the same, and while I think Rex is an excellent coach and I love what he's done to coach this defense, I can agree with SB and Ozzie wanting to go in an entirely new direction.

According to Jamison Hensley of the Sun, reporting this morning, Rex Ryan is not in the running or is even being considered. Rex represents the old regime and Bisciotti wants to clean house completely. If Garrett turns down the job today, look for John Harbaugh to be our next coach. There is no sense wondering why this guy or that guy is not being considered. The first round of interviews is over. The Ravens are confident one of these two candidates will accept the job. I think Rex Ryan is a good coach. But he needs to find a new home. The only way he comes back here is if the new coach wants to hire him back as a DC. I don't think Rex will do that, no matter if its the only job available to him. That's JMO.

Besides the fact that I want to clean house, let's look at Rex's coaching.
This season he was faced with some serious injuries. Obviously not his fault.
However, what did he do to adjust?
Look at the road game in Pitt. Both CBs were out. But did we adjust? Nope, we left the CBs out on islands and look what happened.
He continually tried to play the same style defense with guys that could not execute it.
No thanks.

Two reasons SB doesn't want him...
#1 - The clean house thought
#2 - Rex is not your "corporate" coach. He's a guy who wants to call plays, draw up defenses, get down and dirty. He doesn't want to wax poetic with the press, or think up ways to motivate the players. Rex is a cut and dry type guy, he's going to go in, play football, and that's it. Not that I think there's anything wrong with that style, but I think that's what SB and Dick Cass want.
Personally, I'm thrilled that Rex is likely going to get the Falcons job. I think it's a great opportunity for him, and since it's in the NFC, we'll be able to admire it from afar, not fear it twice a year. I think it's going to be interesting to see his press conferences, but again, I'm happy to see him getting his shot, somewhere else.

If Billick had stepped down on retired (read: not been canned), Ryan would already be coach...all the rest of this stuff is irrelevant.
You can't fire a coach with the stature of Billick and hire one of his coordinators the next year...
