The more I look at the cast of candidates for the Ravens coaching job.. those interviewed, Garrett, Sporano,Caldwell and the cast of others.. Just my personal opinion/feeling I think Jim Schwartz maybe the best choice for the job. They're pluses and minuses for all the coaches that have made the list or soon to be contacted. Just looking at everything I think he may the one that could take the headcoaching spot for the next 10 years. Maybe its the local connection partly, but having ties to the organization previously, having been a good def coordinator with quality defenses and being on the young side of 40, I think he could have what it takes the lead the teams for years to come.. Any thoughts.. for or against.

Schwartz hasn't been contacted by the Ravens yet, has he?

I think Schwartz is as logical a choice as any, at this point! However, they have Not even contacted him yet, which is puzzling.

I like Jim Schwartz. He's local, and a guy who has established himself as successful year in and year out without overwhelming talent. Also he is very personable, as anyone who has heard him on the Rob Long show already knows. Plus he was the DC for the Titans when they beat us in the playoffs in 03, completely shutting down our running game.
He's my top choice.

No thanks .... I like Garret or Ryan.

Nothing really against Schwartz.
I wonder a little about the extra distractions with someone having local (non-football) ties already established in the area.
"Hey, Uncle Pierre is coming, can you get me tickets?"
"you know it would really help if we could have a player turn up at our community fund raiser"
Yeh, I know, kinda stupid examples, but we all have seen what some players go through when they return to their hometown or college city for a game.
Reed playing in the superdome, how many tickets did he need?
Again, nothing against Schwartz, but are these kinds of distractions going to hurt him at all, especially with no HC experience? But it would be nice to get him.

There certainly is a shroud of silence around this whole process. I respect the Ravens for not being a loose cannon about their business, but I don't understand them overlooking obvious candidates that ultimately will become HC's one day. I would like them to interview Jim Schwartz and there is something fishy as to why he even hasn't received a phone call from them.

My thinking on Schwartz is, he's the most experienced assistant we've thought about interviewing (discounting Marty and Cowher, because they were HCs when they were fired or left). On the offensive side, Tony Sparano, Jason Garrett, Brian Schottenheimer, Jim Caldwell, these guys have never been a HC at the NFL level (Sparano was HC at New Haven 94-98, Caldwell was HC at Wake Forest 94-2000)...Sparano and Caldwell have been in the NFL from 2000 onwards, Schottenheimer 2001 onward (and to be fair, it was only because his Dad was the HC i think), Garrett just from 2005 onward. Rex Ryan has been in the NFL 1999 onward, but never HC in college. John Harbaugh has been in the NFL since 1998.
Of all those candidates, 2 have been coordinators for 2 years (Schott and Ryan), and Garrett has been for one year. Schwartz has been a coordinator since 2001. So he's been a coordinator for 6 years. He was here for 3 years before that as an assistant, and he spent 3 years as a Scot for Cleveland prior to that. So the guy has been in the NFL for 12-13 years now. Rex was briefly in the NFL for 94-95 at Arizona under his dad, but even he isn't as experienced at the NFL level as Schwartz is.
So unless we can make a play for Marty S or Cowher, we're going to get someone with practically no HC experience anyway (only Sparano and Caldwell have HC experience at the college level). Having someone local I can think is only a better thing. They're tied to the area, they're going to have more pride playing where they grew up. Sure, there's the chance of people asking him for favors, but there's also a more likely chance he'll be personally invested in coaching here, since he wants to impress his friends and family here.

Seems like there is something to that.
What is sticking in the back of my mind is a comment made by Steve during the Billick press conference/announcement.
Can't quote it exactly, but it was to the effect that he is new at this, and consulted with other owners to help him decide.
Don't know who those "other owners" were, but I will say :261695: Owners have sure picked a ton of great HC recently.
Maybe the "fishiness" is they are badmouthing some candidates or pushing "good" ones that they don't really want. Have to know more about whom he talked to, I hope not Arthur Blank or Wayne H

One thing that popped into my mind is that maybe they already have the guy they want and are keeping it quiet.
I was hoping JS would at least get an interview...esp now that Tenn is done.

I hate to be the one to stand in the way of this conspiracy train, but c'mon. If Schwartz is the most qualified man for the job, and they secretly have plans to get coach X, it makes *no sense* that they would not interview Schwartz anyway.
It doesn't further the conspiracy!
Be patient, remember these conversations and interviews are cloaked in secrecy to protect the integrity of the process, not to hide stuff from schlubs like us.

I just read that Jim Schwartz interviewed with the Washington Redskins. When will we give this man an interview?

I'm not sure why him being "a local guy" is such a draw. Coaching candidates are like players their loyalty lies where the opportunity and the money lies.

I just read on profootballtalk.com that he is the early frontrunner for the Redskins job.

I'm sure Schwartz will want to interview here before making a decision.

Yes, because he is the only interviewee so far, so who is his competition! :rolling:
Seriously, he sounds like a great coach and I'm suprised he hasn't gotten his shot yet. If they go with him, I think it's an intriguing decision, given it'll be a slap in the face to Gregg Williams, but it certainly makes more sense than I usually give Snyder credit for.
And again, why haven't we scheduled an interview with him? Are we trying to scheduled Friedgen for an interview instead? :261695:
May the "Schwartz" be with us.......
