I apologize if this is SPAMmy in nature. But it deals with Baltimore football.
Ladies and Gentlemen,
Now is the time to purchase your tickets for the Baltimore Mariners 2008 inaugural season. If you have been holding off to see what is going on with this new team, let me say this:
This season is going to be nothing less than spectacular. The team ownership is putting together a solid play-off contention caliber team. Training camp will be starting soon. Big and fast talent is being signed, and the entertainment and surprises for the fans is unprecedented.
I can not give too much away as the deal is still in the workings. I will say this though. When all the i's are dotted and t's are crossed, be prepared to be blown away by your favorite pirates from a a certain popular Disney film franchise and soon to be hit weekly television program.
Aside from that exciting news, there will be great give aways at every home game. Or premier VIP pirate ship stage (for stage ticket holders)will certainly be the envy of the league and it is in OUR hometown. Exciting half-time shows will be bountiful as well.
Did we mention programs for each home game as well?
This is the real deal. Professional Baltimore football at its best.
So... what are you waiting for? Contact 1st Mariner Arena today and order your season tickets!!!

I am boycotting b/c the name they chose is so dumb.
"Hey, lets name the team after the bank that sponsors the arena!!"
"That's a great idea"

Hey Dave. The gear looks great, and the website does too.
DB, Thomas Potts, 6’ 3”, 230, of Morgan State comes to the Mariners after spending a season with the Saskatchewan Roughriders of the CFL.
Now *there* goes a guy with something to be thankful for.
Good luck! :toast:

What? They were not named after the bank that sponsors the arena. The name was chosen by the fans an is in-keeping with Baltimore's rich nautical history. It is better then sticking with the "bird" theme. At least they tried something different. However, if you want to "boycott" over the team name, meh, so be it.

Hey Dave,
I was wondering what your avatar was, what team it was, now I know. I like the logo and the gear on the site, might be getting some to wear down here and puzzle the locals and other rednecks that pass through.
good luck with the Mariners!! (although I voted for "Steamers", thought it was a hoot :) )

I voted for the Steamers too. Something about having a crab for the logo just screamed B-more. The owner of the team wanted Steamers to win out as well.

The thing is, if Steamers became the team's name, you can just imagine the headlines should they lose big. Lets hope that doesn't happen.
But yeah, the crab on the helmets would be quite unique and quite Baltimore!

"Steamers in Hot Water"
"Opponent Cracks The Shell Of The Steamers"
"Steamers get Steamed by Opponent"
"Steamers are a Steaming Pile"
"Steamers get Steam-Rolled"
You are right. That could get ugly.
However, I am sure if there is a trouncing of the Mariners, we could see clever lines such as...
"Mariners Drop Anchor in Game three"
"Mariners Run Aground in Season closer"
"Mariners Sink Another One"
:D

but it is kind of lame the name is the same as the arena sponsor.
Could have been the Baltimore Providents.

Okay... that one made me giggle a little.
Sure, I agree that it looks like the team was anmed that way due to the arena sponsor. But the team is getting NO revenue from 1st Mariner Bank.
In fact, after 1st Mariner Bank's unfortunate home loan problems, I will be surprised if the corporate sponsorship will be renewed in the near future.

I'm boycotting because it's one notch below The Blast and a stupid, UNORIGINAL name.
We'd be much better off getting an NHL team.
Let's get that new arena built!!!

That makes soooo much sense. Way to compare apples and oranges. :grbac:

What apples, what oranges.
That version of football sucks, it's worse than indoor soccer.
The nickname is one already used ergo UNORIGINAL
There is no "comparison".
Our energies ought to be into getting the new arena built and the NHL is far better and more respecable than indoor soccer let alone inane arena football.

So I am thinking small because I am looking forward to indoor football? If you do not care for it, then do not go to the games. It is that simple. There are those of us that are into it though. But we are small minded people I suppose. Go kick rocks for all I care.

NHL to indoor football and indoor soccer is apples and oranges.
Name already in use... Seattle... baseball... I do not personally give a rats ass.
Our energies? I do not care if we ever get hockey. I dislike hockey as much as your disdain toward indoor football and soccer. However, a new arena would be nice. I would like to watch my indoor football team play in a posh new facility.

I clearly wasn't comparing the NHL to either. Got reading skilz? I just was basically saying we ought to be thinking bigger and not wasting time on gimmick sports like indoor soccer and indoor football. It's small time and it's for places like Omaha.
You can't compare the NHL to the other two, the NHL is way out of their league!

Good for you Skippy. You like NHL and hate indoor football. I could not possibly care less. The game is not for you. Do not go. But your opinion is not the general concensus. This thread was to let people know about the team that will be playing beginning in March. I do not give a shit about your feelings. You are getting belligerent just to be a prick.
This site is called profootball24x7.com. I posted about a professional Baltimore football team. You wanna talk hockey, start a thread for it. I will gladly post in it about how hockey sucks.

With the talk that keeps popping up about a new arena, I thought for sure that th NHL would look at Baltimore as a market. Then I saw the talk of the size of the new arena. They mentioned a 15 to 20,000 fixed seat venue. That is not that much bigger than what we currently have at the Baltimore Arena.
If the city is going to consider building a new arena, go big. What is the seating capacity at Verizon center?

uh-oh...someone learned to use the edit function.
Anyhoo, minor league indoor football it may be, but the players are paid, so that technically makes it PRO football.
OH YEAH! SLAPSHOT!

I'm dead set against the 15, 000 seat arena.
I can't say enough what a crippling mistake that would be for the city's long term sports landscape.
We've done enough of that over the years by sticking with the present arena and not doing anything about it.

The problem is, big name stars still pack the Arena. The Stones played there, Christina Aguilera played there, Tim McGraw played there, and they keep getting booked. It is viewed as a premier venue (somehow). As long as acts are still getting booked, it will be a tough sell to get the city to greenlight a new arena.
The good news is, eventually, the building will just fall apart beyond repair.

I ain't saying it is not in the works. I am saying it has been in the works for a long time and will probably continue to be in the works for a lot longer. I know we will eventually get a new state of the art facility, I just wish it were sooner than later.
btw, check the Superbowl V patch thread you started under the Colts heritage forum.
For the record, those articles are not exactly promising though. Quite the opposite.
